Not all classrooms have four walls

At St Mary's, we believe that education in the outdoor environment is just as important as learning that takes place indoors. We are extremely fortunate to have a well-developed Forest School area within our school grounds and a qualified Forest School instructor. In addition to this, we have an outdoor nurture classroom that can be used for study or as an alternative venue.
Outdoor learning is a vital catalyst for holistic childhood development, offering crucial benefits that indoor classrooms cannot replicate:
-
Physical Health: Moving across natural terrains improves gross and fine motor skills, builds physical stamina, and boosts immune health.
-
Cognitive Growth: Nature acts as a living laboratory, enhancing focus, critical thinking, and academic engagement through hands-on, real-world exploration.
-
Social & Emotional Well-being: Green spaces significantly lower stress and anxiety. Navigating outdoor challenges builds emotional resilience, while unstructured play teaches risk management and teamwork.
-
Environmental Stewardship: Experiencing the outdoors firsthand fosters a lifelong connection, wonder, and empathy for the planet.
The Bottom Line: Stepping outside transforms education into an active, sensory adventure, cultivating healthier, happier, and more resilient children.

We pride ourselves on the fact that all of our children receive regular, high quality Forest school from Nursery to Year 6. They also take ownership of our polytunnel, raised beds and resident pets - teaching them responsibility, perseverance and team work.

Genesis 1:29: "Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food."
