The week commencing Monday 20th January we are learning all about Chinese New Year! We will learn about the celebration, traditions and the story of The Great Race surrounding the celebration. We will draw and write about Chinese dragons, use ordinal language to discuss what place the animals come in the race, paint symmetrical dragons, taste Chinese foods, and we will get creative and make moving dragons and Chinese lanterns. We will also develop our maths skills by ordering dragons by length and measure them in non standard and standard measures, and we will explore capacity through using rice to fill different containers.

There will be lots of other Chinese New Year themed activities for the children to access independently as well as all of our other areas of continuous provision. The children are fantastic at showing love, respect and friendship towards others as they learn through their play.

On Friday we will also enjoy a tasty Chinese New Year themed lunch!

In phonics the Reception children are working on their phase 3 phonics. They will learn the sounds sh,ch,th and ng this week.  They will continue to learn how to read tricky words and sentences. Thank you for your continued support with reading at home. It is really helping the reception children to fly like an eagle with their reading!

Nursery will continue to develop their reading skills through song, rhyme and lots of phase 1 phonics activities and games. This week they will learn more about the sound s. They will play initial sound games like making silly soup with objects starting with the s sound, toy talk and hunt for things in the outdoor area with the initial sound s. They will practice forming a s shape and draw things beginning with s.
