Literacy-phonics fun!

Nursery

First let’s practice our sounds!

Flash cards

First can you practice saying the sounds we have learnt in phonics, in school so far. You can either use flash cards you have at home, make some flash cards with the letters/sounds s,a,t,p,i,n on them together, print some off using the documents below or use this link to practice saying them accurately and clearly together. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0ZILFubEdI

Pack up the pirate ship oral blending game!

This game will help the nursery children to develop their oral blending skills

Parents first you will need to collect a few toys and objects from around the house (things with a name that can be sounded out clearly to your child like; a cup, hat, dog, tin, bag, peg, pen, coat, car). You can either hide the objects or have all the objects collected for the game displayed in front of your child. Parents explain to your child that you need to help the pirates pack up their pirate ship ready for their next adventure (use a pirate ship if you have one). Sound out one of the objects like this “They need to take a; c-ar, c-oa-t, b-a-g. Can your child blend the sounds, say the whole word and guess the object they need to pack onto the pirate ship?

Now swap over, and see if your child can orally segment the object for you to guess what it is and then pack onto the ship.

If you would like to extend this further you could write a list of the objects being packed onto the ship. Your child could draw the item and then label it with the initial sound or even have a go at writing more sounds they hear in order for each word.

Reception

First let’s practice our sounds!

Flash cards

First let’s practice saying all of the digraphs and trigraphs we have learnt already in phonics, in school so far. Let’s go on a sentence treasure hunt! Can you have a go at reading the sentences and find the treasure! Select phase 3 and then you can pick a focus sound to read in the words. Selet normal text to read the clues in.Use your phonics to read each clue and I hope you find the treasure me hearties! Use an egg box, shoe box or other packaging to create your own treasure chest! What will you use to create the jewels and coins inside? Maybe you could make your own jewellery to go inside your chest!
