Monday 4th May

Hello Class One,

We had lots of fun on our pirate adventure last week! Thank you for sending me lots of photos of the wonderful learning you have been doing together at home!

This week we are going on a minibeast adventure with the Hungry Caterpillar! Maybe you could dress up as a minibeast for today’s home learning. Can you make your own minibeast hat or mask to wear? Let’s find out some more about the amazing life cycle of a butterfly today!

We were planning to watch caterpillars turn into butterflies in class this year. I am sorry we couldn’t do this this summer. Hopefully we can do this when we return to school. In the meantime have a look at this video to see what it might have been like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63B1lnqPa8k. Maybe this is something you could do at home? I know Miss Wood has cared for caterpillars at home with her children before and they loved it!

Instead of flying like an eagle with our home learning this week, let’s fly like a butterfly!

Begin by watching the animation of The Hungry Caterpillar

Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY. Make predictions and talk about the main events, characters and setting as you watch it together. What did you think of the ending? Where do you think the butterfly goes next?

Literacy

Watch the real life, life cycle of a butterfly here. Discuss what happens together. First...then...next...finally… What happens after that? What if there were no more butterflies in the World? How can we care for the caterpillars and butterflies in our garden/World? What would you do if you spotted some tiny caterpillar eggs in your garden?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jivWeOrCaeI

Next can you sequence the life cycle of a butterfly? Talk about the life cycle together and each stage. You can either print and use the life cycle sheets from the documents at the end of this page, or make your own using pasta, drawings or paint!

Nursery -Next label your life cycle with initial sounds or use the word mat in the documents section to write the whole word for each part.

Reception - Next label the life cycle. Then have a go at writing sentences about the life cycle using the template in the documents section, or on a butterfly shaped piece of paper that you can make at home.

Maths

All of Nursery and Reception children can have a go at completing some of the day 1 and 2 Hungry Caterpillar themed maths challenges over the next two days.

Healthy eating ideas for you to make at home

I think the Hungry Caterpillar could do with some more healthy snacks! Mr Challinor has shared this website with us. There are lots of healthy eating ideas for you to try out at home together. Here is the link https://getseteatfresh.co.uk/ Can you make some healthy snacks for the Hungry Caterpillar to try? Can you try them first and see which one is your favourite?

Make a rainbow tasting plate!

Explore food together!

Choose some fruits and vegetables to explore together. Look at the whole fruit, cut it in half, investigate what’s inside, look at the skin and pick out the seeds. How does each fruit or vegetable feel? Smell? Taste? Look? Can you draw them? Take photos of them? Can you play guess the fruit or vegetable?

The fruit I am thinking of is a sphere shape, it smells delicious, you can squeeze juice from it and it is orange. What is my fruit? Did you guess right...it’s an orange!

Sorting foods!

Have a look at the foods in your cupboard at home together. Can you sort them into foods that are healthy and foods that are a treat (and you shouldn't really have too much of!)? Can you pack a healthy lunch box for the Hungry Caterpillar?

Make some fruity smoothies!

Set up a fruit and vegetable shop

Can you set up your own fruit and vegetable shop at home? How much will the items cost in your shop? Can you make some price labels? Who will be the shopkeeper and who will be the customer? You will need to write a list before you visit the shop. You will also need some real coins to pay for the items. Nursery can count out some coins in 1ps to make small amounts up to 10p. Reception can count in 2’s to count out some 2p coins to make totals up to 10p and more! They can also use 1p,2p,5p and 10p coins!

“Hello, welcome to the grocery shop. What would you like to buy? That costs 10p please.”

A mini beast adventure!
