The autumnal weather has definitely arrived bringing with it a treasure trove of learning possibilities for us at St Mary’s.

Over the first autumn term several students have started their ‘Royal Forestry Young Foresters Award’. There are several sessions to complete to gain their award and we have already completed three. Session one involved investigating risks within forests and how to manage them and session two focussed on leaf identification. Session three discussed the positive uses of wood within our setting and our lives and its sustainable qualities.

Class one have been learning about autumn and leaf identification through leaf rubbings, leaf art, leaf crowns and autumn hunts around the school grounds.

Watching the children’s enthusiasm for harvesting our autumn crops at St Mary’s is so rewarding. This term they have helped to harvest raspberries, tomatoes, carrots, beetroot and potatoes. We have even started to use our own compost for the new strawberry bed in class one kindly made and donated by Mr Collis.

Thank you for providing the children with their forest school kit as with the weather getting colder and wetter their wellies and waterproofs are invaluable for keeping them warm and dry. As it gets colder extra layers are also very useful from joggers and jumpers to hats, gloves and welly socks to stop frozen toes.
