Monday 22nd June
Hello Class One,
This week our learning is around the story of Zog! We will have some activities themed around the story, dragons and people who help us.
I hope you have a super week learning around the story and I can’t wait to see your amazing learning! Please send me a photo and a message about the things you have been learning and getting up to at home.
Mrs Coleman-Harris x
Parents remember to do what you can (2 hours throughout the day is plenty- this doesn’t need to be all in one go!) Continue to learn lots more through your own play too.
Watch the animated story of Zog here
Here is the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bwdw8y/zog Make predictions and talk about the main events, characters and setting as you watch it together. What do you think of the characters? Why? If you went to dragon school what skills would you like to learn and why? What do you think of the Princess? Is she doing a good job at being a doctor? Why?
Literacy-
Nursery and Reception
Can you design your own dragon?
If you want to learn how to draw a dragon have a look here and follow the tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb512JasFL8
You can either design a dragon using the outline below or draw your very own dragon! What colour will it be? What pattern will it have? How many teeth will it have? What skills will it be great at? What is your dragon called? Talk together about your amazing dragon!
Nursery can you label your dragon with the initial sound or more sounds you can hear in the word? For example what sounds can you hear in teeth? I can hear the initial sound t. What is the initial sound for tail? Wings? Feet? Your parents can help you with some of the sounds and you can take it in turns to write some of the sounds in the words. Tell your parents all about your dragon and they can write down what you said.
Reception can you independently use your phonics to label your dragon. Then can you write some sentences to tell me all about your dragon. Remember to use your phonics to spell and use the sentence check list to help you remember to include spaces, capital letters and full stops! Here is an example and some sentence starters to help you.
It has got sharp teeth. He is green. She is spotty and red.
My dragon is…
He has….
She is….
It has got…
The dragon is...

Continue to practice your letter formation
I have recorded a letter formation video for you to help you develop your letter formation at home. It’s quite long so you may want to just practice a few letters at a time. I hope it helps! When you open the link, it can be slow loading. Wait a while and it should start to work.

It is super to hear about how this is helping lots of you with your letter formation!

Numberblocks
These are a super way to learn and develop your maths skills. There are lots of episodes available on the iplayer. You could use a whiteboard or paper and join in with each episode by drawing the amounts or writing the number. Maybe you could make some numberblocks cakes, constructions or play dough creations too?
Other play based maths activities for Nursery to work on throughout the week
-
Colour and shape hunt-hunt for colours, shapes and patterns on the dragons and people throughout the story.
-
Counting skills- count the different things you see in the story. How many dragons can you see? How many birds? How many sheep? What if there was one more? One less?
Other play based maths activities for Reception to work on throughout the week
-
Order numbers 0-20, then count and draw the matching amount of dragons or princesses for each number e.g draw 4 wands, 10 dragons and 19 spell books.
-
Adding and subtracting using lots of practical resources (use castle themed objects if you have them) and drawings where you can. Use number stories to help with adding and subtracting e.g there were 2 knights and 4 dragons, how many altogether? Make/draw/get the amounts of knights and dragons to help set up and solve this. Look at recording as a number sentence together 2 + 4 = Continue to make your own number addition stories.
The Princess had 5 tiaras and then 3 were taken away by the wizard, how many are there now? Make or draw 5 tiaras, subtract the 3 (cross them out/take them). Look at recording as a number sentence together 5 - 3 = Now make some of your own subtraction number stories.
