Hello Class One,

 

This week our learning is around the story of Oliver’s Vegetables! We will have some activities themed around the story and healthy eating. 

 

There are some other Oliver books to read together. Why not read Oliver’s Milkshake or Oliver’s fruit salad this week too! Which story is your favourite? Why? 

 

I hope you have a super week learning around the story and I can’t wait to see your amazing learning! Please send me a photo and a message about the things you have been learning and getting up to at home.

Literacy-

 

Nursery and Reception

 

Can you draw and write a shopping list of the fruits and vegetables you would buy from the grocery shop?


 

Nursery can you draw the fruits and vegetables you would buy? Can you label them with the initial sound or more sounds you can hear in the word? For example what sounds can you hear in apple? Your parents can help you with some of the sounds and you can take it in turns to write some of the sounds in the words. Use the letter mat to help you. Tell your parents all about your favourite fruits and vegetables. They can write down what you said or maybe you could have a go at writing some more words to describe the fruits and vegetables for example; yum! 

 

Reception can you independently use your phonics to label the fruits and vegetables. Then can you write some sentences to tell me all about your favourite fruit and vegetables. Remember to use your phonics to spell and use the sentence check list to help you remember to include spaces, capital letters and full stops! Here is an example and some sentence starters to help you.

 

I love red, yummy strawberries.          They are tasty.

Maths

What is your favourite vegetable?

 

Can you ask your family and call some friends and other family members to ask them what is your favourite vegetable and why? 

Record it using a tally on the tally chart (You can print the one below or make your own!).

Which vegetable was the most popular? Which was the least popular? How many chose carrots and broccoli altogether? What if one more chose…? What if there was one fewer…?

Numberblocks

These are a super way to learn and develop your maths skills. There are lots of episodes available on the iplayer. You could use a whiteboard or paper and join in with each episode by drawing the amounts or writing the number. Maybe you could make some numberblocks cakes, constructions or play dough creations too?

 

Other play based  maths activities for Nursery to work on throughout the week

  • Sorting and counting skills-  sort the different vegetables you have at home. How could you sort them? Why? Can you count how many vegetables are in each group and create a number label? What if there was one more? One less? 

Now can you sort the fruits at home?

  • Order numbers 0-5 and then up to 10, then count and draw the matching amount of fruit or vegetables. Can you count out 10 grapes to match the number 10 or 5 oranges to match the number 5. 

  • Patterns- Can you make a simple repeating pattern with fruit and vegetables? 

Here is mine. Can you describe the pattern? Now make your own and tell your family all about it!

 

 

Other play based maths activities for Reception to work on throughout the week

  • Order numbers 0-20, then count and draw the matching amount of fruit or vegetables. Can you count out 20 grapes to match the number 20 or 5 oranges to match the number 5. 

  • Adding and subtracting using lots of practical resources (use fruit or vegetables)  and drawings where you can. Use number stories to help with adding and subtracting e.g there were 2 strawberries and 4 bananas, how many altogether? Make/draw/get the amounts of fruit to help set up and solve this. Look at recording as a number sentence together 2 + 4 =  Continue to make your own number addition stories.

The Princess had 5 apples and then 3 were eaten/ taken away by the wizard, how many are there now? Make or draw 5 apples, subtract the 3 (cross them out/take them/eat them). Look at recording as a number sentence together 5 - 3 = Now make some of your own subtraction number stories.

  • Doubling and sharing- explore doubling fruit and vegetables.

Then explore sharing them fairly between 2 people or 4 people by cutting them up. 

  • Patterns- Can you make a simple repeating pattern with fruit and vegetables?

Role play

Set up your own fruit and vegetable shop at home. All you need is some food items from the kitchen and some money (real, pretend or made on paper) 

 

“Welcome to the fruit and vegetable shop, how can I help you?  Would you like a basket? What would you like to buy? Today we have strawberries on special offer. They cost 10p.”

 

Nursery work together with your family to give the correct coins to pay for items up to 10p. Reception can have a go at combining coins to make small amounts up to 20p. Reception could even explore counting in 2’s and 10’s to make amounts.
