Image of Sorting and comparing amounts!

This week in maths we have been learning about sorting! We have been sorting buttons, natural items, pom-poms, fruit-anything wecould find! We sorted by colour, buttons with two or four holes, shape, size and type. We explained why items did and did not belong in the groups using vocabulary like same, different and belong.

After we sorted our items we arranged them in a five frame. We talked about what we saw. "I can see three and two spaces left." "2more would be five." We didn't need much counting for this. We are learning to see five items in different ways without the need tocount. This is called subitising!
We compared the items in our five frame. "There are more butterflies" "There are fewer flowers." "There are equal amounts of flowers and birds."
There was amazing use of the language fewer, more and equal today.

I wonder what you can sort and compare amounts of at home?Could you sort some button or fruit? Which has more? Which has fewer? Do you have any equal groups?
