Given the frosty weather outside, I thought I would ask the children what they thought the small rocks were that appear on the playground when it's cold.
Some children already knew that it is salt! We talked about why we put salt down when it's icy, and followed it up with an experiment to prove that salt melts ice.
We used salt to free the poor trapped animals in the ice blocks. The children were also free to experiment and choose which tools they thought would be the best at chipping away at the ice.
