Wednesday 22nd April
Hello Class One,
I hope you are ok and you have enjoyed some Jack and the Beanstalk themed learning this week. I have loved seeing your super Giant drawings and writing! Lots have you have had a go at the maths challenge too!
Here are some more activities for you to have a go at over the week. Remember to do what you can and continue to learn through your play!

Literacy- Lets do some phonics and reading today!

Nursery phonics
There are lots of activities here so try a few over a couple of days. They do not need to be done all at once. You can revisit them and so them again and again if your child enjoys them.
Flash cards
First can you practice saying the sounds we have learnt in phonics, in school so far. You can either use flash cards you have at home, make some flash cards with the letters/sounds s,a,t,p,i,n on them together, print some off using the documents below or use this link to practice saying them accurately and clearly together. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0ZILFubEdI
Letter formation
Now you might like to practice forming the letters to represent each of these sounds. Remember if you are still learning how to write the letters ask your parents to write them using yellow pen and you can go at writing them over the top, or ask your parents to show you how to write them first and then you can have a try. You can also practice forming letters in sand, mud, shaving foam, with chalk, paint- anything you like! Have a go and try your best! Make a mark and see where it takes you!
Oral blending game!
Today let’s work on our oral blending skills. That means can you listen to the sounds in a word said out loud by someone else, and then you blend them to read and say the whole word. You were all getting so good at this in school!
Let’s play ‘If you think you know the word shout it out!’ Can you help to sing the song? (Sing it to the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it!)
If you think you know the word shout it out,
if you think you know the word shout it out,
if you think you know the word, then tell me what you heard,
if you think you know the word shout it out!
Now parents can you sound out a word (ideas in a list below), allow your child some time to listen (repeat it if needed), then your child can shout out the whole word and then they do the matching action.
Parents sound out;
R-u-n (child shouts run!)
S-i-t
H-o-p
S-p-i-n
C-l-a-p
T-ur-n
Stamp your f-ee-t!
Drive your b-u-s!
Pretend you are a c-a-t!
Climb the Beanstalk like J-a-ck!
Did you blend the sounds, hear the word and shout it out?
Another blending game to try
First of all have a go at listening to the sounds in these words. These words all have the sounds s,a,t,p,i,n in them. Can you hear and say the word? Click here to have a go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ovJIxTQpsU
Read a blending book together
Maybe you can have a go at blending these words in the book with your parents? Can you have a go by yourself? https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/29253.html

Reception phonics
Flash cards
First let’s practice saying all of the digraphs and trigraphs we have learnt already in phonics, in school so far. You can either use flash cards you have at home, make some flash cards with the letters/sounds on them together, print some off using the documents below or use this link to practice saying them accurately and clearly together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNcBWSBxSp0
Tricky words!
Can you play tricky word splat at home together? First you will need to write some tricky words out on some paper. Use your tricky word lists in your book bag or choose some from the mat here. Place the cards on the carpet. Then you need a splatter (a fly splatter, spoon or something similar). Ask someone to call out a tricky word for you to splat. Maybe you can have a competition against mum or dad and see who can splat it first?
Read the story of The Big Carrot
Someone else in Jack’s village has been growing giant vegetable plants too! Can you read the story of The Big Carrot. Use your phonics to help you sound out and blend the words.
Here is the link to the story https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/digital_books/1394.html
Now can you answer these questions in a full sentence:
Who grew the big carrot?
How did it get so big?
Who helped to get the carrot out of the ground?
What do you think of the people for helping? I think they are….
How would you help? I would…
What do you think they made with the carrot? I think they made…
What would you make? I would make….
What do you think happened next?
If you were to grow a giant vegetable what would it be? What adventure would you have with it?
For example; I would grow a big pumpkin and turn it into a house! Can you draw a picture of the giant vegetable you would grow and what you would do with it?
More phonics and reading fun!
I have attached a folder below with lots of phase 3 phonics activities in it for you to have a go at, at any time you would like.
Maths- measure the Giant’s foot prints!
Parents can you create some footprints of different sizes (draw them on paper or chalk them outside.) and hide them for your child to discover. Try and encourage and model lots of size vocabulary throughout this activity.
Nursery
Find the footprints! Who could the foot prints belong to? What makes you think this? Can they describe the size of the footprints they find using a variety of size vocabulary? Can they find the smallest footprint? The largest footprint? Can they compare the size of two footprints? Now can they order the footprints by size?
Next investigate the feet and shoes that belong to the people in your house. Who has the smallest feet and shoe size? The biggest? Does anyone have feet or shoes larger than the Giant? Can you order the shoes by size or put the people in order by their feet size?
Reception
Find the footprints! Who could the footprints belong to? What makes you think this? Can they describe the size of the footprints they find using a variety of size vocabulary? Can they find the smallest footprint? The largest footprint? Can they compare the size of two footprints? Now can they order the foot prints by size?
Following this can you collect some wooden blocks, pencils or something similar. Now see how many blocks/pencils it takes to measure the largest footprint; the footprint might measure the same as 10 blocks. If you have a ruler or tape measure you could try measuring some of the footprints using this too. Can you record how many blocks/pencils/centimetres the footprints measure by writing it on the footprint?
Next investigate the feet and shoes that belong to the people in your house. Who has the smallest feet and shoe size? The biggest? Does anyone have feet or shoes larger than the Giants? Can you measure the feet of someone in your house using pencils/blocks/centimetres? Can you order the shoes by size or put the people in order by their feet size?
Your topic challenges this week are all around the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Remember these are ideas to keep you busy for the whole week!
There are lots of ideas attached below of some Jack and the Beanstalk inspired learning activities! Take a look and choose some to try out together. Attached at the bottom of this page are some folders with lots of activities for Nursery and Reception to do, all with a Jack and the Beanstalk theme. There is an I- spy counting game, cutting activities, writing prompts, maths games and lots of other things for you to try out!
Try out some of these challenges! Complete pages 5 and 6 of the School closure pack.
Visit the Education City website
Your login is username will either be your first name and the number 0 after it or your first name, first initial and a number 0 after it. The password is dog.
For example; Tom0 or Tomf0
When you have logged on there will be lots of homework activities for you to explore.
Have a go at some of these art and design activities!
Try using blocks or something similar to print a castle for the Giant!
Try using pencils, pens, crayons, paint or anything you like to create some beanstalk art! You could use cotton wool for the clouds and natural resources for parts of the beanstalk.
Use any left over packaging to create a junk model castle!
Create a Jack and the Beanstalk small world area
Can you use small world toys, lego, printable pictures, junk modelling resources and anything else you can find, to make a Jack and the Beanstalk small world area? Can you draw the characters from the story or print them off and cut them out, then add them to your small world area. Then you can retell the story from beginning to end, using key phrases from the story. Maybe you could change the story? Maybe someone else could live in the castle or maybe Jack is captured by the Giant?
Planting at home!
Can you plant some vegetables at home, care for them and watch them grow. Maybe you could plant a bean seed in a bag or in a jar and watch it grow. Can you spot the roots and the shoot appear? Can you record what happens to it each week? Maybe you can sequence the life cycle of a bean?
